Utopia vs. America (Utopia)

We Americans think we have the best government. We can do and say just about whatever we want. We have many other freedoms other countries wish they had. Before America was colonized and turned into the United States, a man named Thomas More came up with his own perfect society called Utopia. American government is better than Utopian government because of its allowance of individuality, less harsh penalties for crimes, and its commercial productive abilities.

In the American Bill of Rights within the 1st amendment it states that all Americans have the right to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to assemble, and freedom to question and protest the government. The only one of these freedoms granted to the people in Utopia is freedom of religion, which in the big picture is only so much compared to all of the other freedoms we have. The Utopians live under a Communist like government that does not give them freedom of speech, freedom to assemble, and freedom to protest the government. These restrictions on opinion and choice go so far as to say what the people can wear and what their cities look like. They all are forced to wear the same thing with only a small difference to distinguish from sexes and marital status. Cities are also very much the same, only having a difference in geographical location. People were even required to have a type of passport just to go from one city to another. American government is better because of the freedoms allowed to the people.

In Utopia not only are there many restrictions on what people can say and do there are also many strict and unnecessary punishments for breaking them. Slavery was a punishment for committing crimes that they claimed were of great offense. Such a crime as adultery, which is nowadays an everyday occurrence for many people in America, was punished by slavery. But, when adultery occurs today in America it is a civil matter that usually ends up in divorce at the worst. This kind of ridiculous punishment is prevented from being sentenced to us by the 8th Amendment in the Bill of Rights, which states that the punishment must fit the crime and no cruel or unusual punishments may be afflicted. American government is better because of the protections given to us by the 8th Amendment.

In America we have a great economy overall compared to other countries. This is because of all the companies that are in America. In Utopia, because of its Communist nature with everyone being equal, there is little to no purpose in starting a company. Just as it is today in some communist countries, no person can have more money than someone else. So, why would anyone work harder than someone else when they know that they will end up only earning the same amount? That is why America is so great. People can work as hard as they can and it will pay off because they will earn more money than those who just float by working at minimum wage, while a doctor can make 50 times minimum wage. This may make us greedy but it promotes a more productive government. It also allows scientific breakthroughs to occur much faster because of the competitiveness of rival companies trying to out do each other. American government is better because of its commercial productive abilities.

In conclusion, American government is better than Utopian government because of its allowance of individuality, less harsh penalties for crimes, and its commercial productive abilities. When Thomas More came up with his Utopia as the perfect government he hadn’t fully thought about how people would react to Communism. But, now that it is the 21st  Century and Communism has already been tried in the old Soviet Union and other countries, we can see how it is better for the people and for the country to have an American style republic as its form of government.
